Useful information for submitting comments:
Comments are most effective if they are specific. For example, a comment like “The Astrodome needs to be preserved” is not as helpful as a comment like “The Astrodome is important to Houston or the community because _________, _________, and __________” or “I have great memories of the Astrodome, and I would like my children to be able to make memories there too. I think that it would be most helpful if it was repurposed as _________.” What are the issues that are most important to you (such as maintenance costs or its appearance, for example), and why? This feedback will be used to propose a new vision for the Dome that has public support that we can present to elected officials and the public, so the more specific you can be, the more we will be able to incorporate your feedback into the proposal.
There are a lot of other ways you can submit your feedback and engage in the Future Dome outreach process:
The most direct and useful way to submit your feedback is to take the survey!
You can also participate in any of the upcoming virtual or in-person public events. See our events. And also check back for new posted events.
Following and engaging with us on social media is another great way to give your feedback more informally. Sharing your posts is a great way to help us reach more people and get more opinions and ideas. We will also read through and do our best to respond to comments on posts, direct messages. And we will use the results of Instagram story polls, quizzes, and ‘ask a question’ stickers to collect and disseminate information.
Find us on Instagram and Facebook @astrodomeconservancy and on Twitter @AstrodomeFans! We will be posting information about the Dome, nostalgic photos, details about events, interactive Instagram stories, and more!
Future Dome is a community engagement campaign where we are asking for your input on the future of the Astrodome. We are here to listen to you. The results of this campaign will be used to support a new, feasible, and community-backed approach to the reuse of the Astrodome. Let’s come together under one roof and make it ours!
We have a lot of ways that you can provide input. You can take the survey. You can also visit the Events page for our event calendar and recordings of past virtual events and public meetings, or visit our Participate page for links and information about ways to participate. You can also leave a comment or ask a question.
We will use the results from the Future Dome outreach process to help us design a proposal for the reuse of the Dome that is backed by the public. We will also use the results as data to back up the proposal. We will then present the proposal to elected officials and to the public at a launch event.
The Astrodome cannot be demolished. It is protected from wholesale demolition by its designation as a Texas State Antiquities Landmark.
The 2013 bond referendum that was rejected by Harris County voters, was not a question of the $217M plan or demolition. It was simply a vote to support the proposed plan to repurpose the Dome as event space or not. Future Dome is the first coordinated effort to solicit input from the public.
You are in the right place! This website is a great resource for finding out more about this community engagement process! You can visit our Learn page to learn about the history of the Astrodome, the Astrodome Conservancy, and the Future Dome engagement effort. You can also visit the Events page for our event calendar and recordings of past virtual events and public meetings, or visit our Participate page for links and information about ways to participate.
That depends on the type of input and type of activity that you participate in. Survey results, for example, will be used directly as data to show what the public wants to see for the future of the Astrodome. Similarly, comments through the website or social media, responses to the coasters, submissions of ideas, and Instagram engagement through polls or quizzes will be recorded and used as data as well.
You can expect to see the results of the Future Dome outreach process at a launch event in late 2021.
It is actually quite expensive. It would cost $30-100M to tear the Astrodome down. The Astrodome also only costs the County about $160,000 per year to maintain, and the last proposal was estimated to cost $105M for a new event space.
Most of the $105 million that was set aside for the remodel of the Astrodome is still reserved for the Astrodome. Some was spent before the plan was put on hold. The county is currently evaluating if that plan is the right use of money for the Dome. That’s why we want your input – to tell the County what the public thinks is a good use for the Astrodome!
