A majority of Harris County voters support using public money to help renovate NRG Stadium and the Astrodome, according to a new poll released Thursday by the University of Houston’s Hobby School of Public Affairs.
About 74% of the 2,300 surveyed voters said they support using some level of public funding to renovate NRG Stadium, though a slight majority said the public share should not exceed 20% of the total costs. About 62% said they would support Harris County using public money to renovate the Astrodome.
Notably, the poll did not ask voters for their views of using taxpayer money to build a new facility to replace NRG Stadium, an option the Texans have explored in ongoing negotiations with Harris County.
The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4%. It asked voters what share of costs Harris County should cover for NRG Stadium’s renovation. The options for 0%, 1-20%, and 21-40%, were the most frequent answers, with about a quarter of recipients picking each of those selections. Just 5% said the county should cover more than 60% of the renovation costs.
